Utah’s flagship university, The University of Utah or The U, is a public coeducational research university located in Salt Lake City. Established in 1850, Utah serves as the oldest university for higher education in the state being formed before Utah was given statehood. Prior to the 2002 Winter Olympics the campus received a major facelift as they served host to the Olympic Village as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies during the games. This extensive facelift resulted in great improvements to the Rice-Eccles Stadium, a light rail leading to downtown Salt Lake City, a new student center, additional student housing along with a campus hotel and conference center.

When you think of notable athletic programs the University of Utah is not one that usually comes to mind however they did make the US News and World Report’s “College Sports Honor Roll” in 2002. Utah was the first school to produce No. 1 overall draft picks in both the 2005 NFL and NBA Draft. Utah participates in the Pac-12 Conference. The football team went 11-0 during the 2004-2005 season defeating Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl 35-7, becoming the first team from a conference without and automatic Bowl Championship Series (BCS) bid to go to a BCS bowl game. The men’s basketball game won the NCAA Championship in 1944 and the NIT title in 1947. The basketball program made headlines again in 1998 when Rick Majerus took the team to the NCAA Final Four losing the championship game to Kentucky 78-69.
